Uncommon Ground: Landscape Perspectives

Photography by Tim Chandler

Uncommon Ground: Landscape Perspectives explores the ever-changing landscapes of the Big Country of Texas, shaped by both natural forces and human influence. Chandler’s collection of photographs, taken between 2020 and 2023, captures scenes from the 26 counties that define this region, as well as select locations beyond its borders. While much of the area is rural, these landscapes are rich in history, revealing a story of transformation.

From highways and county roads to remote, off-the-grid locations, Chandler’s images document shifting land use—where agriculture and cattle once dominated, oil fields, wind farms, and solar arrays now stand. Increasingly, these spaces also serve as retreats for those seeking a quieter life beyond the city.

Through this collection, Chandler invites viewers to take their time to reflect on their own relationship with the land and the beauty it holds. These images encourage a sense of connection to the natural world, prompting contemplation of both its past and its evolving future.
